Mrs. Hazel Louise Walker Byrd, 97, of 4520 Ottawa Street,
Columbus, Georgia died Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at St.
Francis Hospital. Funeral Services will be held 1 PM
Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at St. James AME Church with Rev.
Joseph Baker pastor and Rev. Scottie Swinney Eulogist.
Interment will follow in East Porterdale Cemetery according
to Sconiers Funeral Home, 836 5th Ave., Columbus, GA.
Visitation will be 12-6 PM Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at the
funeral home.. Mrs. Hazel Louise Walker Byrd was born June
17, 1918 in Columbus, GA. She was the youngest of five
children born to the union of the late,
Elnora and
Anderson
Walker. She is a 1936 graduate of William H. Spencer High
School. After graduating she attended Georgia State College
at the Industrial College in Savannah, Georgia (later named
Savannah State University) graduating in 1941 in , with a
Bachelor's Degree in Education. She began her teaching
career in 1941 in Gainesville, GA. She would further pursue
her education, attaining a Master's Degree in Education from
New
York University
in 1956. She retired after
forty years of service from Muscogee County School District
in Columbus, GA. After completing her education at Savannah
State College she married her college sweetheart, Samuel
Byrd, II. She had two children during this union, Mildred
and Samuel, III. Mrs. Byrd was a life-long member of St.
James AME Church. She often spoke about going to church at
least three times a week as well as two services on Sunday.
She was a member of Stewardees Board #2(immediate past
president), Willing Workers, Women's Missionary Society and
she chaired the Culinary Committee. Mrs. Byrd was
responsible for the preparation and serving of many meals
including district conferences, Bible School, special
services, and funerals. She continued this work from the
early 1900's until her decline in health. She enjoyed
traveling; she has been to Germany, Greece, Spain and Italy.
Mrs. Byrd also enjoyed cruises with her friends and family,
sometimes taking two a year. She has been to traditional
cruise areas as well as Alaska and Europe. Mrs. Byrd is
preceded in death by her son Samuel Byrd III, and her
daughter Mildred Byrd Miles. She is survived by her
granddaughter, Angela M. J. Miles of Columbus, GA, a niece
,Luella Cain of College Park, GA and a nephew Willard Walker
of Lansing, MI, and a host of other family and friends.
Funeral services: 1 PM Wednesday March 23 2016 at St. James
A.M.E. Church
Burial: East Porterdale Cemetery.
